The contribution made by our Primary School that consists of Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 sections is more evident today than ever before when we see the progress of the students who have had their complete Primary Education at Gateway College, sitting the IGCSE and Advanced Level examinations.

Foundation Stage is a distinct stage, and is important both in its own right and in preparing children for later schooling. Gateway’s curriculum is carefully structured with provision at the Play Group for the different starting points, and, thereafter, to continuously build at Nursery and Kindergarten. The curriculum at Foundation stage is essentially a mixed one bringing in the best practices from Montessori, Pre-School methods etc. Various themes incorporated throughout the year make learning fun and exciting.

Early years learning at Foundation Stage concentrates on 7 areas split between prime and specific areas of learning.

The prime areas of learning are:

  • communication and language
  • physical development
  • personal, social and emotional development

The specific areas of learning are:

  • literacy
  • mathematics
  • understanding the world
  • expressive arts and design

At Play Group, we practice the concept of ‘Learn through Play’. Well planned play, both indoors and outdoors, is a key way in which young children learn with enjoyment and challenge. During the two years at Nursery and Kindergarten, children are provided with the necessary support to reach the early learning goals. ICT (Computing), swimming and athletics are introduced at Kindergarten level.

The curriculum at Key Stage 1, is carefully planned out to ensure that the child not only gets the right start, but also a bright one. Just as in the Foundation Stage, we provide a caring environment, with two members of experienced and trained staff in each class, to ensure every child gets the correct guidance required at this tender age. With modern techniques, up-to-date facilities, best of care and loving staff, we ensure that children receive personalized attention.

Subject areas covered at Key Stage 1 include:
Core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science
Foundation subjects: Computing, Design and Technology (D&T), History, Geography, Art & Design, Music and Physical Education. Global Perspectives is incorporated across certain foundation subjects.
Others: Sinhala, Tamil, Drama, Oriental Dance, Religion (Buddhism/Christianity/Roman Catholicism/ Islam/Hinduism) and Swimming.

The Key Stage 2 curriculum continues to build, stimulate and promote pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills in a variety of subjects in order to prepare them for a wider school curriculum in later years. In order to meet this objective, the school introduces subject teachers at this level.

Subject areas covered at Key Stage 2 include:
Core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science
Foundation subjects: Computing, Design and Technology (D&T), History, Geography, Art & Design, Music, French and Physical Education. Global Perspectives is incorporated across certain foundation subjects.
Others: Sinhala, Tamil, Drama, Oriental Dance and Religion (Buddhism/Christianity/Roman Catholicism/ Islam/Hinduism).

There is much emphasis on the three core subjects during this stage. At Year 6, at the end of this Key Stage, the school prepares all learners to take either the Edexcel Achievement tests or the Cambridge Primary Checkpoints in English, Mathematics and Science. These non-competitive tests that are in line with the Key Stage tests or the 11+ examinations in the UK, are held for benchmarking and diagnostic purposes. It is encouraging to see our students reaching high levels of achievement at these end of Key Stage assessments.
